I finally tried a version of the smoothie that was often recommened during my clinical internship. The consumption of dates is recommended for various disorders and overall health in classical Ayurvedic texts. Unfortunately, I had never been much of a date fan. That is, until I put them in a smoothie! Not only did it taste absolutely delicious (for those craving a milkshake, I promise this is a more-than-satisfying substitute, and guilt -free is an added bonus!) Another bonus I very soon discovered was its laxative action (in Ayurveda we call this virechana, or purgation). This was my simple recipe:
– 4-6 dates, pitted
– 1/2 avocado
– 1-2 tbsp hemp seeds, can substitute chia or flax seeds
– 1/2 tsp cinnamon
– 1/4 tsp dry ginger powder
– 8-10 oz almond milk (or other dairy substitute)
Optional:
– 1 tbsp coconut shavings
– 1/2 banana
– 1 tsp maple or yacon syrup (if you need more sweetening, but dates do the job for me 🙂
Pacifies Vata and Pitta, may increase Kapha. Drink in the morning, following a cup of hot water.
